Aditi Upreti

GRE: 330 (V-162 | Q-168)

Aspirants who score a 330+ are not prodigies.
They have their own share of struggles and Aditi Upreti is the testimony to this.
The GRE® 330 scorer faced quite some potholes while preparing for her GRE®.

Aditi shares the GRE® tips that eased her preparation and paved the way for a 330 score!

  • Before you start your preparation take up a diagnostic test. This will give a rough idea of what are your strengths and where your weakness lies. Getting this clarity will help you sketch a targeted study plan.

  • It is crucial to know the contextual nuances of words and not just their meanings. So make sure you know the words' usages too. Try using the learned words in your daily conversations or to explain a situation or scenario.

  • Understand where your problems lie and figure out the solution to it. In my case, the two factors that contributed to my issue with the Quants section was not being clear with concepts, being tardy at calculations and not managing my time well. My SFA helped me figure these out and tackle them one at a time.

  • Getting answers right on reading comprehensions, especially the ones very similar answer choices is very difficult. To get them right you have to identify the nuances, eliminate the wrong answer and answer the most relevant one. For this, you need to practice with a wide range of RC questions. But these are not easily available online.

Ishita Lalan

GRE: 328 (V-158 | Q-170)

Ishita had a good span of 80 days for her preparation.
But due to her internship, she was only able to concentrate on her preparation in the last 25 days.
With diligence and timely planning, she came out with flying colours!

Ishita shares the strategies that pushed her to the target score.

  • Due to time constraints, I could only go through about 600 words in the GREedge essential wordlists, but that was enough for me to score a 158 in verbal. What really helped were the practice questions from the advance question bank. I would recommend test takers to refer to sample questions and solve them.

  • As far as Quants is concerned, make sure you don’t commit any silly mistakes. To make it a habit, include a few extra minutes for it while solving the problem. Practising this will give you the much needed extra minutes to check the answers.

  • Don’t just read a lot of articles or magazines, but also pay attention to the words used and the sentence structures. This will help you in the RC and AWA sections to skim for answers faster.

  • Learn to manage your time efficiently. Take up practice tests and set the time less than the actual GRE®. Though it will be difficult in the initial few tests, this practice will train you to answer the actual GRE® faster.

  • While taking up practice tests ensure you also take up at least one GRE® style practice test which is of the adaptive format. My full-length GRE® practice test at GREedge is the real game changer. It got me ready for the actual one.

Subhanwit Roy

GRE: 330 (V-161 | Q-169)

Subhanwit started from scratch. He went on to secure a
330 GRE® score, 100% funding, 4 Top Admits from US & Germany.
Despite having no prior exposure to the GRE®, Subhanwit achieved his target, in fact, slightly higher.

Subhanwit shares the tried & tested strategies that helped him in his GRE® preparation:

  • Practice makes perfect. Practice as and when you learn. This will promote complete and holistic learning of a concept. Work more on RC questions, as it is taken from multiple sources and you need to familiarise yourself with answering them.

  • Wordbot is the key. Go through wordlists on Wordbot and learn it one list at a time. Revise the learned wordlist and take up the test. This will help etch the words in your memory and will be much easier to remember the meaning of the words.

  • Do not take the Quants section lightly. We, engineers, tend to be generally good at math and hence ignore the importance of the quants section. During the actual GRE®, you might overlook some formulae or commit minor calculation mistakes that can cost you your score. Use the techniques given by the SFA to check the answers before finalizing on it.

  • Prepare with the course material that's difficulty level matches up with the examination. The preparation materials provided by GREedge provided exactly that. The practice materials were not easy, not annoyingly difficult - It was just right.

  • The RC and AWA section actually requires you to evaluate your writing, which according to me, is impossible. Someone else needs to evaluate your writing and provide feedback for you to improve. My SFA gave me constructive feedback on every assignment which helped me write grammatically coherent sentences.

Akshaye

GRE: 334 (V-165 | Q-169)

The fascination with Computer Science propelled Akshaye to pursue his MS abroad.
But to reach his dream Akshaye had to face the formidable list of GRE® words, added with his rusty quants skills.
Akshaye managed to overcome all his challenges and score a 334 on his GRE®.

Here. Akshaye shares his guidelines to create the Ideal GRE® Study Plan

  • First and foremost, draw up a comprehensive timetable and plan how to effectively study so as to finish the portions according to the timetable.

  • Work hard on your vocabulary. Target a fixed number of words that should be mastered that day, no matter what. Also, make sure you revise them regularly, at frequent intervals.

  • While preparing for GRE® the first thing to do is revise the words that you studied the previous day. If any practice tests are planned for that day as per your timetable, tackle that first, as it is better to give tests when you are fresh. Then go about finishing the topics set out for you in your GRE® timetable.

  • You have to ensure that your quant basics are in place because scoring a 170 or 169 in the quant section is very much possible. Giving the quant section the required time is very important. Make sure that you are acquainted with all kinds of problems so that you are ready to tackle them.

  • Practise as many questions as possible from all the possible question types: TC, RC and SE. Once you practice a lot of questions, you get an idea of how to read a question, how to read the given passages, or how to understand the options properly to arrive at the best solution.
For example, for questions that ask for the primary purpose of the passage in an RC type question, you’ll get an idea of how to evaluate the options given, whether they are too broad or too narrow in scope, whether they are not related or contrary to what is given in the passage, once you’ve practised enough questions. This kind of ‘intuition’ can be developed by thorough and consistent practice.
